Step one: Belly up to the bar and order. Alternately, find your lovely server and order. Either way, you get tasty, delicious beer. Probably.
In all seriousness, though, enjoying beer is an art form. And like all art forms, there are rules, most of which can be broken if that’s what suits you. So, a few things to keep in mind.
- The craft beer revolution is still relatively new to the restaurant scene. Not every bar or restaurant understands the fine art of beer drinking. This means, they won’t all have a beer list, they will think Blue Moon is craft beer and when you ask for a Fulton Lonely Blonde, they’ll blink at you adorably.
- You have the right to send a beer back. It does not make you picky. It makes you a good beer drinker. Bubbles sticking to your cup? It’s dirty. Send it back. Beer came in a frosted glass? It’s killing the flavor. Send it back.
- For Pete’s sake, ask if they do samples or flights. You don’t always have to commit to 16 or 20 ounces of a mystery beer.
- Use a glass, for God’s sake, man, use a glass. Beer glasses are literally designed to enhance the beer drinking experience. They create the proper amount of head – when the beer is poured properly - release the lovely, delicious aroma of the beer, and, you just look cooler with a pilsner glass in your hand.
